O'Grady has the father of Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as an advisor to financial institutions. Her parents raised her at home in Wheaton (Illinois) and she graduated in 1981 from the North High School in Wheaton. Before moving to Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. Her career started as model and actress for commercials in Montgomery Ward. She had her debut on the big screen in the romantic comedy of 1988 She's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring role of ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
