O'Neil joined O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when she was in high school. Her vocal performance impressed the panel of judges and she was voted into the 100th round. O'Neil was praised highly from panel of judges. She suffered major defeats in the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was on the third row, followed by the second place. The judges were shocked by the results and advised the viewers to select contestants such as Melissa with the strongest singing skills. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after an impressive string of performances. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil beat Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and the youngest winner in Idol history. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol straight away.
